Naming names … well, sort of! (UPDATED)

Naming names … well, sort of! (UPDATED)

Whenever I start a new romantic comedy, I allow at least a week or so to concoct my characters’ names.  (Exception: Elliot Recounte, my male lead in “Much Ado at the Mauna Kea,” cooked and cooked throughout the summer of  2014.)

Meanwhile, I’ve just revised my working title to: “Mostly When I See A Rolls Royce,” (previously: Mostly When I See Rolls Royces.)

I’ve wanted to write this story since 1979 — it’s my first enhanced roman a clef! Set in NYC and surroundings. Late 70’s.

Locations:

East Hampton beach house smack on the ocean

Two bedroom Upper East Side apartment in a pre-war luxury building with doormen and elevator men

Two bedroom West End Avenue ground level bachelor pad

Very quiet 2 1/2 room studio in 1916-built Emily Court, canopied but no doorman, worn down

Short Hills country estate turned bachelor retreat

Interior of 1978 Rolls-Royce

21 Club

Sardi’s

Central Park

Park Avenue, upper 60’s – lower 80’s

Extensive Railroad scenes, LIRR, PATH, N.J. various commuter trains and subways

My four lead characters and a walk-on dog (Everydog)

ABIGAIL MEYER, 26, copywriter/publicist (Abby, Geeba) Dark-eyed, dark-haired, slender, slightly taller than average, somewhat free-spirited

SUSANNA FALWELL, 27, marketing specialist (Suki) “Intelligent” blue eyes, artificial long blonde hair, relatively small, tennis player build

MAXWELL DUNRAVEN, 37, self-employed business writer (Max, Maximus) Blue-eyed, Tom Cruise-like, savvy

ANDRE BLUM, 37, French expat, very successful fashion entrepreneur (Bloomiekins) Short, brown-eyed, alert European underpinnings

And … introducing EVERYDOG! (An unruly long-haired mutt who stole one little girl’s heart and generally stressed out Max and Abby…)

I always need a little music to kick off my silent writing “encampments” ... enter Barry White’s Greatest Hits.

Back in ’08, when I wrote Seeking Number 20,” my farce about the college admissions race, Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” glued me to my muse!  What a song! Thank you, Mr. White! Thank you, again and again! The lyrics go like this: www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/barrywhite/cantgetenoughofyourlovebabe.html

Excerpt:

My darling, I can’t get enough of your love babe
Girl, I don’t know, I don’t know why
Can’t get enough of your love babe
Oh, some things I can’t get used to
No matter how I try
Just like the more you give, the more I want
And baby, that’s no lie
Oh no, babe

Ready, get set, GO!!!!!
