Our turkeys are sleeping in on Black Friday.

Most likely, the approach of Thanksgiving was just enough to throw our turkeys a bit off balance.  We couldn’t help noticing a recent uptick in pre-Turkey Day drop-ins.  One of the “kids” even climbed up on the patio chair right outside my window and struck a pose that I read as  “I’m in command now.” Maybe I  just misunderstood his friendliness. Or possibly he wanted a heart-to-heart chat  about whether I was planning a holiday menu…

Marian’s right — from the start, she told me that these fairly drab-looking non-native turkeys would stand in as our extended family on the island.  (Since she’s seldom wrong about anything,  I think it just shows how perceptive she is.)

It’s sort of mutual, here on the farm.  We’ve come to believe that the turkeys on our property have adjusted to our now three months of daily co-residency and like to show up as free entertainment during meal time  — by that, I mean “our” meal time.  Their meal time goes on forever.  And  that’s about all they do  — or so it seems –is just root around the the weeds for on the spot easy-to-prepare snacks.

As I mentioned, all our tukeys  took cover yesterday.  Well, they made one brief semi-brave appearance as we were backing out of the garage.  All that back room pacing and waiting to see if we were true blue pals or just your average human beings must have exhausted them.

We’re not that surprised they’re taking the day after Thanksgiving off and are likely flying across town chasing Black Friday deals.  Who knows?   It’s so easy to over-think things, when you live with wild turkeys.
