In memoriam: My first love

In memoriam: My first love

How many daughters can say that about their fathers, I wonder. Mine is now at rest, after a distinguished career and many hearty decades as a terrific father. His rich life ended on November 1, when he sped off to catch up with my most favorite artist, my mother. The photos he left us behind celebrate the great love he and my mother shared.

Pamela, I was very sorry to learn of your father’s passing just tonight at a Board meeting of the Michigan Photographic Historical Society. We never met in person, though we came close when I was visiting my son in New York City some years ago. We talked on the phone, but our schedules wouldn’t permit a personal meeting.

Our first contact was when he asked to reproduce my article for his American Photographic Historical Society which he saw in our Michigan journal. We continued contact when I saw he had put my article on the front page of his journal. I thanked him, and we continued our occasional correspondence over the years, most recently after your parents’ move to Florida.

George was a great writer and an important photo-historian, the life-blood of the New York organization. He will be missed by the world of photographic history, and I will miss hearing from him. I believe I sent a holiday card to him during Hanukkah, but then was too busy with family matters to realize I had not heard back from him.

My great sympathy goes to you and your family.

      Dear Mr. Magid,

I was deeply touched after reading these kind words about my father.
We miss him, too. His photo pals — through the years, near and far — meant so much to him.

      With much appreciation,
      Pam
